Q: What are some emerging treatments for chronic low back pain and neuropathy?

A: Approximately 30 million individuals suffer from peripheral neuropathy and one in five individuals suffer from chronic lower back pain in the United States.

Relatively newer treatments for the pain associated with peripheral neuropathy and lower back pain include spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). SCS is a neuromodulation device that transmits electrical signals to the spine thereby blocking pain signals in the lower back extremities or even the neck, depending on the placement of the device. The same is true for PNS, with the exception that this device stimulates peripheral nerves to block nerve pain.

Other treatment options for chronic lower back pain include epidural steroid injections/selective nerve root blocks, facet steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and other minimally invasive techniques. Alternative treatments for peripheral neuropathy include Qutenza (capsaicin) 8% patch application or topical creams and oral medications.
