History of Excellence
Caring for You. Since 1952.
We began in Orange County over 70 years ago, driven by a clear need for a hospital in this community. With a shortage of hospital beds, frequent accidents and injuries along Pacific Coast Highway, and the nearest hospital miles inland, accessible, high-quality care was essential.
Hoag Family Foundation
The vision for a hospital in Newport Beach took shape in 1944 when Rev. Raymond Brahams, seven Presbyterian church members, and a physician founded the Presbyterian Hospital of Laguna Beach. After securing a site on the Newport Beach bluffs, they renamed it the Presbyterian Hospital of Orange County but struggled with post-war construction costs.
In 1950, the Hoag Family Foundation, established by J.C. Penney partner George Hoag Sr. and his family, stepped in with funding to bring this vision to life. With strong community support, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian opened on September 15, 1952, with 75 beds, 68 physicians, and 60 employees. Today, the George Hoag Family Foundation and the Association of Presbyterian Members continue to provide leadership, ensuring Hoag remains a beacon of excellence in Orange County healthcare.

Hoag has attained its fifth Magnet® recognition for continued dedication to high-quality nursing practice.
Hoag attained the Magnet® recognition as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program. This credentialing program for hospitals recognizes excellence in nursing and is the highest honor an organization can receive for professional nursing practices.
Additionally, Hoag earned full accreditation with DNV Healthcare, the organization whose accreditation and quality management aligns with Hoag’s focus on constant improvement.
National Recognition
Hoag named by the Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by Surgical Review Corporation.
Hoag has performed over 33,000 robotic-assisted surgeries—a significant milestone for the first health system in Orange County to adopt the technology twenty years ago.
Hoag was also named by Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Heart Care and Obstetrics for eight years in a row (2014 – 2021).
Recent Major Milestones
Hoag opened the new Hoag Center for Advanced Visualization and Immersive Therapeutics inside Hoag’s Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute.
Hoag is the only site in Orange County to enroll its first two patients in a clinical study evaluating NK cell therapy in women with triple negative breast cancer.
Hoag announced a major reinvestment in its facilities and treatment technologies for the Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center.
Hoag launched Hoag at Home, a comprehensive home care service offering that provides patients with the high-quality personalized care they need in the comfort of their home.

- Hoag has become the first hospital on the West Coast to achieve dual accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Continence Care for Women, recognized by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) and National Association for Continence (NAFC) for providing the highest quality of care and patient safety.
- Hoag has received the prestigious SOAP Center of Excellence (COE) designation by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP).
- The Women’s Choice Award has designated Hoag as top 1% of Mammography Imaging Nationwide in 2023-2024.
- Designated a Blue Distinction® Center designation for cardiac care based on quality and cost-efficiency by Anthem Blue Cross.
- Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute has earned the highest distinction possible, a three-star rating out of three stars, from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for three categories of surgery – isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR), isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR) and isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Hoag’s journey towards health equity
1998
1998 Dr. Parry & Hoag leadership were ahead of their time by partnering with local nonprofits to address social needs. The first mental health community mental health program for low-income community members was established. The Hoag social work clinician was out stationed at a local family resource center providing free psychotherapy services in English and Spanish. She was the first social worker to work outside of the walls of the hospital.
2015:
Social work team huddle also known as our transformative “hallway meeting” sparked the idea to bring other service providers to serve our clients at our center with the primary goal of reducing barriers to accessing resources. Leadership supported the idea and gave us additional suites in the building to expand programming! Convened and engaged community members and stakeholders to inform us on how the center can meet the needs of the vulnerable community. The center’s model and mission was developed in collaboration with the community.
2015:
Our grassroots approach to connecting with community members continued with the addition of the Promotor/Community Health Worker outreach team. Program was philanthropically funded to reach the Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach communities. Formalized our Health Profession and Workforce Development Training program by becoming an accredited CE provider.
2016:
A transformational philanthropic gift from the Hoag Family Foundation supported hiring more staff, leveraging programs, and adding integrative wellness classes. Collaboration and co-location with local nonprofits were established. Secured space for our own family resource center, coming full circle as our flagship program was started at an FRC. The building was named the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living.
2020:
In response to the emergent needs in the community during the pandemic, a COVID-19 Crisis Response Team (CCRT) was created. Comprising of a Case Manager, Registered Nurse, and Clinical Social Worker, the team provided short term interventions which include the immediate assessment of needs and delivery of care navigation for families impacted by COVID.
2021:
Service lines continued to expand as the need for health navigation and chronic disease management was identified and exacerbated by pandemic. The Community Nurse Navigation and Health Coaching program was established. Additional Farsi speaking services were added for the growing population seeking out services at the center.
2024:
Regarded as a trusted provider serving vulnerable community members with highly coordinated health, wellness, and social support services in one location to help them navigate challenges and thrive long term. Now a team of 31 staff including public health (MPH), social workers (MSW, LCSW), registered nurses (RN), case managers (BS), community health workers/promotores and 10 contracted wellness instructors.
Our Vision of Excellence for The Future
The causes of health inequity include economic factors that are exacerbated by language barriers, legal status, and high depression rates — all major factors that keep residents oppressed and disadvantaged. Hoag’s Community Benefit programs help enhance the health status of the community. The following highlights Hoag’s 2023 impact.

The Department is housed at the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living (MHSCHL). The MHSCHL is a collaborative endeavor, bringing like-minded organizations and non-profits under one roof. The MHSCHL allows providers to take an integrated, holistic approach to community services addressing everything from health care to legal services, to mental health and social support.
