Hoag Again Earns Straight ‘A’s’ for Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group
New Grade for spring 2025 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety
NEWPORT BEACH/IRVINE, Calif., May 1, 2025 –Recognizing its commitment to patient safety, Hoag’s two hospital campuses have once again received straight “A’s” from The Leapfrog Group in its annual Hospital Safety Grade. This distinction recognizes hospitals that earned an A in at least five consecutive cycles of the Hospital Safety Grade issued by the independent national nonprofit organization focused on patient safety.
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
“Earning straight A’s from Leapfrog is a reflection of the consistent, safe and high-quality care our teams deliver every day,” said Elmira Burke, Hoag’s chief patient safety officer. “We’re proud to be recognized again for the strong culture of safety and excellence that Hoag physicians, nurses and staff work hard to uphold for our patients and community.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
