Hoag Orthopedic Institute Top in Nation for Total Joint Replacement Surgery

Hoag Orthopedic Institute continues to be a preeminent leader in orthopedic care, and remains a leader in joint replacements. Over the past 10 years, HOI has consistently performed more joint replacements than any other institution on the West Coast and the third most in the nation, consistently over the past 10 years. Recently, HOI was once again named a top orthopedic hospital by U.S. News & World Report ranking #18 nationally, and high performing for hip replacement, knee replacement and hip fracture.

According to Nader Nassif, M.D., HOI’s chief of joint replacement, the reason for the success of the program comes down to research and education, innovation and patient experience.

Out of 4,843 facilities, HOI has the third lowest readmission rate for hip and knee replacement, and the lowest in California. Additionally, HOI has the lowest hip and knee complication rate in Los Angeles and Orange County, the second lowest complication rate in California, and fifth in the nation compared to nearly 5,000 hospitals. HOI is the only hospital in Southern California and top 3% in the nation, to consistently receive a 4 or 5 Hospital Patient Survey Star Rating by CMS.

Innovation has also been key. From developing a same-day surgery program for joint replacements at HOI hospital (based on key criteria and evaluated for appropriate patients), to adding robot technology to assist with joint replacements at both the surgery centers and hospital.

HOI has been at the forefront of enhanced recovery protocols that allow patients to be discharged home on the same day of their hip or knee replacement surgery. HOI was one of first hospitals nationally to develop this program in 2015.
