Timed Barium Esophageal Emptying Study

Overview

A Timed Barium Esophageal Emptying Study is a simple procedure to test if the esophagus is emptying fully into the stomach. This radiological test uses barium and x-rays to create images of your esophagus and stomach. This test is used to diagnose achalasia, dysphagia and GERD.

How it Works

We measure how long it takes for barium liquid to pass from your mouth to your stomach to measure how quickly your esophagus empties using x-ray images. In addition, a barium tablet is swallowed to measure the time it takes to move through your GI tract.
